What kind of preparation is this?
It contains a mixture of enzymes called pancreatic powder.
Pancreas powder supports digestion. The enzymes are obtained from the pancreas of pigs.
The capsules contain small enteric-coated granules that slowly release pancreatic powder into the intestines.
Capsules are used:
Digestive disorders (maldigestion) due to insufficiency or absence of pancreatic function (exocrine pancreatic insufficiency).
Cystic fibrosis to maintain insufficient pancreatic function.
How do capsules work?
The enzymes in this supplement digest food as it passes through the gastrointestinal tract. Capsules should be taken during or immediately after a meal or snack. This allows the enzymes to mix thoroughly with the food.
Capsules cannot be taken.

Your dosage is measured in “lipase units.” Lipase is one of the enzymes in pancreas powder. Different doses of this drug contain different amounts of lipase.
Always follow your doctor’s instructions regarding the number of capsules to take.
Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose for you. It depends on the:
the severity of your illness
your weight
your diet
fat content in stool
If you continue to have fatty stools or other stomach or intestinal problems (gastrointestinal symptoms), talk to your doctor as your dosage may need to be adjusted.
How much to take
For patients with cystic fibrosis
Children:
The dose of this drug may be inappropriate to initiate therapy in children, depending on the child’s age and weight.
The doctor can determine the required dose for the child by using dosage forms containing fewer lipase units.
After establishing the dose per meal, the drug can be used in children in this dosage.
The usual starting dose for children under 4 years of age is 1000 lipase units per kilogram of body weight per meal.
The usual starting dose for children 4 years of age and older is 500 lipase units per kilogram of body weight per meal.
Youth and adults:
Weight-based enzyme dosing should begin at 500 lipase units per kilogram of body weight per meal in adolescents and adults.
For all ages:
Your total daily intake should not exceed 2,500 lipase units per kilogram of body weight per meal, or 10,000 lipase units per kilogram of body weight per day, or 4,000 lipase units per gram of fat consumed.
For patients with other pancreatic problems
Youth and adults:
The usual dose per meal is 25,000 to 80,000 lipase units (equivalent to 2 to 8 capsules).
The usual snack dose is half the meal dose.
If you took more than you should
If you take more than you should, drink plenty of water and talk to your doctor or pharmacist. Very high doses of pancreatic powder have sometimes caused elevated levels of uric acid in the blood (hyperuricemia) and urine (hyperuricosuria).
If you forget to take it
Do not take a double dose if you forget to take the previous dose.
If you stop taking it
Do not stop taking it without first consulting your doctor. Many patients have to take this medicine for the rest of their lives.
