Indication:
L-thyroxine is a medicine containing the thyroid hormone levothyroxine as an active ingredient. This has the same effect as the natural hormone. You will receive L-thyroxine to replace missing thyroid hormone and/or to relieve stress on the thyroid gland.
L-thyroxine is used.
to replace the missing hormone in any form of hypothyroidism,
to prevent the formation of a new goiter (enlargement of the thyroid gland) after surgery for goiter, if thyroid function is normal,
for the treatment of benign goiter (benign goiter) with normal thyroid function,
for malignant tumors of the thyroid gland, especially after surgery, to suppress the growth of new tumors and replenish the missing thyroid hormone.
Dosage:
Always take your medicine exactly as your doctor told you. If you are unsure, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
The daily dose required for you will be determined by your attending physician based on the results of the examinations.
dosage
Tablets with different strengths of active ingredients (25-200 mcg levothyroxine sodium) are available for individual treatment, so you usually only need to take one tablet per day.
To start treatment and increase the dose in adults and for treating children, the doctor may prescribe tablets with a lower content of active substance.
Depending on the clinical picture, the doctor will use the following recommendations:
To treat hypothyroidism, adults initially take 25–50 mcg of levothyroxine sodium per day. This dose may be increased by 25 to 50 mcg of levothyroxine sodium at intervals of two to four weeks to a daily dose of 100 to 200 mcg of levothyroxine sodium as directed by your physician.
To prevent the re-formation of a goiter after its removal and to treat benign goiter, take 75–200 mcg of levothyroxine sodium daily.
After surgery on the thyroid gland for a malignant tumor of the thyroid gland, the daily dose is 150 – 300 mcg of levothyroxine sodium.
If necessary, a lower dose of thyroid hormone may be sufficient.
Children
For long-term treatment of congenital and acquired hypothyroidism, the daily dose is usually 100–150 mcg of sodium levothyroxine per m2 of body surface.
In newborns and children with congenital hypothyroidism, rapid hormone replacement therapy is especially important to achieve normal mental and physical development.
For this form of hypothyroidism, a daily dose of 10–15 mcg of levothyroxine sodium per kilogram of body weight is recommended for the first 3 months of treatment. Then the attending physician will select the required dose individually based on the results of the examination (in particular, the level of thyroid hormones in the blood).
For children with acquired hypothyroidism, a dose of 12.5–50 mcg of levothyroxine sodium per day is recommended at the beginning of treatment. Your doctor will gradually increase your dose every 2 to 4 weeks until the dose required for long-term treatment is reached. The doctor pays special attention to the level of thyroid hormones in the blood.
Elderly patients, patients with coronary heart disease, patients with hypothyroidism
In elderly patients, patients with coronary artery disease and patients with severe or long-standing hypothyroidism, treatment with thyroid hormones should be initiated with extreme caution (low initial dose, then increased slowly and at longer intervals with frequent monitoring of thyroid hormones). ).
Patients with low body weight and patients with large goiter
Experience has shown that even in patients with low body weight and in patients with large goiters, a lower dose is sufficient.
Duration of use
In case of hypothyroidism and thyroid surgery for a malignant tumor of the thyroid gland, the medicine is usually taken throughout life, and in the case of benign goiter and to prevent regrowth of the goiter – for several months or years; until the end of life. For the treatment of benign goiter with normal thyroid function, a treatment period of 6 months to 2 years is required. If treatment with the drug during this time does not produce the desired effect, the doctor will consider other treatment options.
If you took more than you should
Signs of overdose are described in the “Side Effects” section. If these symptoms occur, consult your doctor.
If you forget to take it
If you take too little or forget a dose, do not take the missed dose and stick to the prescribed dose.
If you stop taking it
For treatment to be successful, you must regularly take the drug in the dosage prescribed by your doctor. Under no circumstances should you change, interrupt or stop treatment with the drug prematurely, otherwise your symptoms may recur.
If you have any more questions about using this medication, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
Way :
Please take the entire daily dose in the morning on an empty stomach, at least half an hour before breakfast, with plenty of liquid, preferably a glass of water. The active ingredient is better absorbed on an empty stomach than before or after a meal.
Children receive the entire daily dose at least half an hour before their first meal. You can also let the tablet dissolve in a small amount of water (10-15 ml) and administer the resulting mixture (it should be prepared fresh for each dose!) with a small amount of liquid (5-10 ml).
