Therapeutic indications
Retin A and generic tretinoin are used to treat acne. It can reduce the number and severity of acne and promote faster healing of acne. Tretinoin belongs to a class of drugs called retinoids that affect the growth and production of skin cells.
How to use Retin A cream
Wash your hands before applying Retina A or Tretinoin. Clean the affected skin thoroughly with a mild cleanser or soap and pat dry. Use your fingertips to apply a small amount of medication (about the size of a pea) in a thin layer, usually once a day at bedtime, or as directed by your doctor. A gauze swab or cotton swab can be used to apply the liquid.
With some products, you should wait 20-30 minutes after cleansing your face before applying this medication. If you have any questions, consult the instructions on the label, the patient information leaflet, or ask your pharmacist.
Use Retin A on skin only. Do not apply to inner lips or nose. Do not apply to cuts, scrapes, sunburn or eczema.
Side effects
Immediately after using the medicine, a short-term sensation of warmth or tingling may occur. During the first 2-4 weeks of using the drug, redness of the skin, dryness, itching, peeling, slight burning or exacerbation of acne may occur. These effects usually decrease with continued use. A daily moisturizer can be helpful for excessively dry skin.
If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist immediately. Your doctor may require that you reduce how often you use tretinoin, change the strength or type of cream, or stop using Retina A.
Tell your doctor right away if you get: blisters, crusting, severe burning or swelling of the skin, redness and watery eyes (conjunctivitis), swelling of the eyelids, changes in skin color.
Contraindication
Some products that may interact with Retin A include permanent hair care solutions, products containing alcohol or menthol (such as astringents, toners, shaving creams), medicated or abrasive soaps and cleaners, products containing sulfur, resorcinol or salicylic acid, products containing alpha hydroxy acid, products containing glycolic acid, soaps and cosmetics with a strong drying effect, other drugs that can increase your sensitivity to sunlight (including fluoroquinolones such as ciprofloxacin, tetracyclines, thiazide water tablets such as hydrochlorothiazide, sulfa drugs such as sulfamethoxazole, phenothiazines such as chlorpromazine).
