Mechanisms of action of simvastatin
How does Zocor lower cholesterol levels? Statins have been shown to lower blood cholesterol and prevent atherosclerosis or heart disease. They work by decreasing the production of cholesterol in the liver. They block an enzyme called HMG-CoA reductase, which the liver uses to make cholesterol.
Why is Zokor given at night? Most statin manufacturers recommend taking them at night, based on physiological studies showing that most cholesterol is synthesized when dietary intake is minimal.
How much does Zocor lower cholesterol levels? Zocor lowered LDL (“bad”) cholesterol by an average of 35%. Zocor lowered total cholesterol by an average of 25%. Zocor lowered triglyceride levels by an average of 10%.
Do you age faster on Zokor? However, this is not the only mechanism that has been demonstrated, and which one is causal has not actually been established. Interestingly, another study recently reported that statins may slow down aging, as they were found to be associated with an increase in telomere length.
Dosage
Take Zocor in the same way. Follow all instructions on the leaflet. Never take this medicine in large amounts or for longer than prescribed. Taking too much of this medicine can cause serious or life-threatening side effects.
Zocor is usually taken at bedtime or in the evening. If you are taking this medicine more than once a day, take it with a meal. Your doctor may change your dose from time to time to ensure the best results.
The usual dosage range is 5-40 mg per day. In patients with coronary heart disease or at high risk of coronary artery disease, treatment with Zocor can be started simultaneously with the diet. The recommended usual starting dose is 10 or 20 mg once daily in the evening. In patients at high risk of coronary heart disease due to existing coronary artery disease, diabetes mellitus, peripheral vascular disease, stroke, or other cerebrovascular disease in history, the recommended starting dose is 40 mg per day. Lipid determination should be performed after 4 weeks of treatment and periodically thereafter.

Contraindication
Before taking simvastatin, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have other allergies. Before using this medicine, tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: liver disease, kidney disease, alcohol use.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) states that statins are not recommended for pregnant women. They are “Pregnancy Category X” drugs, which means that studies have shown that they can cause birth defects and that the risks clearly outweigh any benefits.
Can I drink alcohol while taking Zocor? While there is no direct risk from taking these two substances, both statins and alcohol can impair liver function and cause tissue damage. Thus, mixing alcohol and statins can put more stress on the liver, potentially increasing the risk of liver damage or disease.
