The drug is used for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis, as well as related diseases, for example, myocardial infarction. Prescribed for partial blockage of the bile ducts, with diets designed to reduce cholesterol levels in the blood.
Pharmacodynamics. The active components of the drug bind bile acids. The resulting complexes are excreted from the body through the gastrointestinal tract.
Main parameters of pharmacokinetics. The drug is not absorbed into the gastrointestinal tract, but works in the intestinal lumen, removing excess bile acids directly from the chyme. Does not interact with the internal environment of the body.
Contraindications. Do not use in cases of complete blockage of the bile ducts, phenylketonuria, or hypersensitivity to the components of the drug. Not prescribed during pregnancy and lactation.
Side effects. Increased gas production, stool disorders, heartburn, vomiting, steatorrhea, abdominal pain, exacerbation or development of pancreatitis. With prolonged treatment, ulcer patients may experience gastric or intestinal bleeding. In some cases, skin irritation and rashes are noted.
